Avant-Garde Lawyers (AGL) is an international collective of lawyers committed to protecting and promoting respect for freedom of artistic expression. In a time of rapid political, legal and moral change, when artists are threatened and imprisoned for their art, we believe artists should be able to claim strong levels of protection for their contribution to public debate and involvement in matters of general interest. To this end, we develop concrete action plans to challenge and re-think the status quo surrounding the legal protection of artistic expression.
AGL mission is three-fold: first, we transform legal services for artists through unique defense strategies and high-performing legal teams comprising lawyers, academics, artists and art historians; second, we translate the law and make it more transparent and accessible to artists through courses, events and by inviting artists to join our defense teams. The third component of the mission–steeped in research and advocacy–involves the analysis of legal attitudes towards art in national and regional courts alongside promoting the right to freedom of artistic expression as a distinct legal category.
To better perform our role and achieve our mission, we have established the International Network of Pro Bono Lawyers. While not our primary focus, AGL also promotes pro bono culture for the benefit of artists and creative endeavors.
