Module 1: Admissibility and Filing an Application before the European Court of Human Rights, Interim Measures

Expert: Hildur Hjörvar, LL.M. and Teaching Fellow at Harvard, former Lawyer, Registry of the European Court of Human Rights

    28.04.2025 | 16-17.30 CET

Hildur Hjörvar is an LL.M. candidate and Teaching Fellow at Harvard Law School and a Legal Adviser at the EFTA Surveillance Authority. She previously served as a senior Lawyer at the European Court of Human Rights where she trained incoming lawyers on the freedom of expression, and a Deputy to the Permanent Representative of Iceland to the Council of Europe. She is admitted to the Bar in Iceland where she practiced law in the private and non-governmental sectors.

The class begins with a general introduction of the European Court of Human Rights and then provides participants with the practical tools they need to successfully file cases before the Court, explaining its rules on admissibility and its procedures in an accessible and actionable way. Also discussed are Interim Measures and the process of applying for them: these are temporary court orders that the European Court of Human Rights can issue in cases where there is a real risk of serious harm occurring while the Court deliberates on a case and can be very effective tools for protecting essential interests while justice is pursued.
