This sesion explores the tensions between freedom of expression and the fight against antisemitism in Germany, using Documenta 15 as a case study. We aim to foster understanding of the legal framework, institutional responses, and the risks of censorship—pressures that discourage or suppress expression without formal legal measures. These dynamics are especially relevant when artistic content becomes the target of public controversy or political scrutiny.
Background:
Documenta 15 (Kassel, 2022), curated by Indonesian collective ruangrupa, was marked by controversy. Allegations of antisemitism began before the event due to participation by groups associated with the BDS movement. After opening, the artwork People’s Justice by Taring Padi was removed following backlash over imagery considered antisemitic. Further criticism emerged over additional artworks, culminating in the resignation of Documenta’s director. While some called for greater vigilance, others warned of a chilling effect on international artistic participation and curatorial independence. The situation raised broader questions about Germany’s legal and cultural thresholds for acceptable expression.
Lara Khaldi and farid rakun walked the cohort through their experience of Documenta 15, from engaging with the Documenta team, development of the lumbung concept for the exhibitions, and the subsequent series of attacks and accusations of antisemitism directed at ruangrupa and the organizers.
