Mehrzatt Safari is a fearless Iranian musician, composer, and activist who uses his art to bravely stand up against the regime and support the Woman, Life, Freedom movement.
Known for blending traditional Iranian sounds with contemporary political commentary, Mehrzatt has long used his music as a means of protest and resilience, often facing threats, arrest and assaultAGL and our Global Network have supported Mehrzatt in his journey towards physical safety and his search for a safe haven to continue to create.
Mehrzatt was born and raised in a deeply religious and conservative city in Iran where he encountered significant challenges as an artist and activist advocating for freedom, human rights, and justice. By the time he left his hometown, Mehrzatt had at various times been arrested and assaulted for offenses including carrying a musical instrument, having long hair, participating in musical events, and accompanying female friends in public. According to Mehrzatt, “The combination of threats, harassment, and the ban [against his music]—stemming from my outspoken criticism of the regime through my art—forced me to seek safety in neighbouring countries.”
In recent years, Mehrzatt has released several songs that underscore the importance of free expression and support the Woman, Life, Freedom movement. Following the broadcast of “Where Is My Iran” and five other songs on Iranian exile TV, Mehrzatt gained popular attention for his music, but also increased scrutiny and harassment from the Iranian government. To be able to create freely, Mehrzatt has been forced to relocate multiple times.
In his pursuit of a safe haven where he can continue his work without fear of persecution, Mehrzatt reached out to Avant-Garde Lawyers. We are proud to have assisted Mehrzatt in his application for a French asylum visa, and we are grateful for the support from our Global Network as Mehrzatt awaits the outcome of the Consulate’s assessment. Despite the many obstacles he has faced, Mehrzatt is unwavering in his passion to perform and engage with audiences who value his work and activism.
Mehrzatt expressed his gratitude to AGL with the following note:
Dear Andra and Daria and the Avant-Garde Lawyers Team,
From the bottom of my heart, I sincerely thank you for the time, guidance, and support you have given me. Receiving such care, dedication, and attention at this crucial point in my life means the world to me.
Your detailed advice for the interview and your explanations about the asylum process in France have helped me feel more prepared and confident in taking this step. I know that without your support, getting through this stage would have been much more difficult.
I deeply appreciate your efforts and hope that one day I can repay your kindness.
We are grateful for the support of Deniz Okumusoglu from our global network who has assisted Mehrzatt.
